What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)? [The easiest way to understand it]

In this article you will find out the easiest way to understand Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and why it could benefit you.

If you googled HBOT before you have probably been faced with really complex articles full of terms you have never heard before. Those days are over! Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a turning point in your health, and it is important to understand it. So let’s make it simple.

To receive HBOT, you sit or lie down in a pressurized hyperbaric chamber and breathe pure oxygen. The effect is like when the floodgates of a dam are opened, and more water rushes down the river.

But with HBOT, extra oxygen flows into your cells. Cells need oxygen to help the body heal itself.

In this article you will learn, in the easiest way possible:

  1. What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

  2. What medical conditions can HBOT help with?

  3. Where can you find this treatment?

HBOT is best-known as a treatment for decompression sickness (a.k.a. the “bends”), a risk to scuba divers.

HBOT is so much more than a therapy for the bends. It is used to help treat a variety of health conditions and diseases.

Every cell in the body needs oxygen to function. Patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) breathe 100% pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber.

In an HBOT chamber, air pressure is increased up to three times higher than sea level pressure. Under these conditions, the lungs absorb more oxygen than achievable at ambient air pressure.

The lungs add this pure, pressurized oxygen to the bloodstream, and then it circulates throughout the body. Cells then use the oxygen to heal and repair the body.

What does that mean? Breathing pure, pressurized oxygen:

• Raises the volume of oxygen transported by the blood, allowing the oxygen to convert to liquid form, energizing hard-to-reach biological fluids such as plasma and lymph

• Encourages the development of new blood vessels to increase circulation in the body

• Decreases swelling, reduces inflammation, bolsters the immune system, and boosts the release of stem cells

• Promotes the body’s ability to fight disease and infection

Dictionary.com defines the term "hyperbaric" as "pertaining to or utilizing gaseous pressure greater than normal, especially for administering oxygen in the treatment of certain diseases."

Breathing oxygen under higher atmospheric pressure air drives up to 1,200% more oxygen into the circulatory system. The body becomes super-saturated with oxygen, therefore regenerating damaged tissue, strengthening the immune system, and increasing the body’s capacity to heal.
